Lucky Roll

Lucky Roll rules:

Updated Monday,September 9, 2023

The Lucky Roll game is a dice rolling tournament style game hosted by Shelley, Lorraine, and Aaron, with Cathy and Roger serving as fill-in hosts as needed. The Sunday/Thursday tournament is played at 5:00 PM eastern, and the Wednesday/Saturday tournament is played at 4:00 PM eastern.

The game host, (the person who rolls the dice for the game), the backup roller, and both scorekeeper and backup scorekeeper will officiate over the game during game play, with all final decisions being made by the dice roller for that game.

Each player is on their own competing against all the other players.

  1. In order to play you may arrive at any time prior to the round preceding the final round and be added to the roster. If you arrive during gameplay, please do not interrupt gameplay by announcing yourself. New players will be given an opportunity to be added at the end of each round, be placed in alphabetical order, and be given their turn in the next round. Once the round prior to the final round has been completed, no new players will be added, and any player who has missed their last two consecutive turns will not be permitted to participate in the final round since they will not be able to announce themselves back into the room. Please note that the officials reserve the right to issue a penalty of a lost turn if a player keys up at any other time during a round or disregards any other rule of the game.
  2. The winner of each game is the player who has the highest score at the end of the round following the round in which game point is reached. All players’ scores are recorded over a 3 month period and the top 20 scores of the 25 games are your average. Rankings for each game and overall rankings are sent to the Babble List after the game is completed. Overall rankings are included in the Daily Announcement for the upcoming game.
  3. When the dice are rolled, the player must tell the host two things: First, what they see, or what score they have, And second, the number of dice they wish to roll or if they want to stop and keep their points.
  4. The player may not receive outside assistance when rolling. If the player receives help, the player offering the help will be penalized by skipping his/her next turn, and the player receiving the help will be given the points he/she has accumulated before the help was given.
  5. The current player may request that the dice be replayed no more than twice per game following the initial roll. Any replay of the dice must come from the dice roller. If any individual in the room other than the dice roller keys up to tell the current player what they have, this will be viewed as outside assistance being given, and rule 4 will apply.
  6. The score keeper may request that the dice be replayed which will not count against the current player if they are uncertain as to what they thought they heard when the dice were played, versus what was given by the player.
  7. The dice roller may also choose to replay the dice which will also not be counted against the current player’s right to request two replays. Examples of why the dice roller may grant a replay include, 1. another player keying up, which may impact the current players ability to hear their dice, and 2. an issue with the dice cutting out due to internet problems by the dice roller. Note: for number 2. to occur, the dice roller must hear from a number of players that their dice were cutting out. If the cutting out is only noted by the current player and no other player agrees that it did indeed cut out, the replay will not be granted if the player has used both of their replay requests, so as to not encourage a player to use this as an excuse for simply not paying attention to their roll.
  8. If after two attempts by the player to follow rule 3 are unsuccessful, the player will be awarded the total score of the dice for the current round if it is a valid amount, and the roll will go to the next player.
  9. At the beginning of each player’s turn, the host calls the player’s name and rolls the dice. If after 3 seconds the player has not responded, the host will call their name a second time. After 3 more seconds have passed, the current player is considered absent, and the next player’s name is called, and the dice are replayed and gameplay moves on. In an effort to cut down on the amount of interruptions during a game, if a player is skipped, their name will be called once for their next turn. They must key up immediately to let the dice roller know that they are back at their computer. If they do not respond, there will be no second call, and the roll will pass to the next player. Absent players will be skipped in subsequent rounds unless they announce themselves back in play at the end of a round and not interrupt other player’s turns.
  10. If the player is having computer or iPhone difficulties, they should leave the room immediately to indicate they are having problems either keying up or hearing the dice. The dice roller will then wait for a maximum of 30 seconds for the player to reenter the room at which time, their dice will be replayed. If the player does not reenter the room in a timely manner, the roll will move to the next player.
  11. No person may stand in or speak for a player at any time. If a player is unable to play for themselves, they should either leave the room and then return when they are able to continue playing, or key up at the first opportunity and let the host know that they are stepping away and will follow the absent player rule to return.
  12. If a player is having difficulty staying in the room and is continually bouncing in and out, when they enter the room for the third time, they will be asked not to return should they leave the room again. Constant bouncing in and out of the room is extremely distracting for a player who is trying to hear their dice roll and for the scorekeeper. If you know that you are having issues staying in the room, you should be mindful of the distraction you are creating, and voluntarily stop attempting to reenter the room after 3 tries.
  13. Total score, including game point score, will only be announced at the end of each round by the scorekeeper, this includes the final round after the game point has been reached. This is to ensure that the scorekeepers have matchingg score sheets before they are submitted.
  14. At the beginning of each game, the roller will roll the dice to select a lucky number for the day’s game. The lucky number adds 500 bonus points to the player’s score if the player rolls that number. The bonus points are awarded if the player is able to score, otherwise they are lost.
  15. The host and scorekeepers must be able to hear your instructions, so excessive background noise should be eliminated. If you are asked by the host to turn down your background noise, you must do so immediately, or risk the loss of your turn.
  16. At the end of 25 games, the top five scoring players will play a tournament game to determine who will be the prize winner for the quarter.
  17. The top scorer in the regular game will pick their playing position first in the tournament game, followed by the second highest player until all the players have been positioned and the game will start.
  18. The winner of this tournament game will win the quarterly prize of fifty dollars. An additional prize of twenty-five dollars will be awarded to the individual who finishes first in the rankings before the final game is played for each of our two tournaments. Please note that although we welcome all players who are interested in participating in Lucky Roll, we strongly suggest that you only participate if you intend to be present in a majority of the 25 games. If your intent is to play in only a handful of games for the quarter, then be aware that once we reach game 21, if you have missed 10 of the first 20 games played, you will not be permitted to play in the final five games.
